Based in London, the successful candidate will join Global Economics, a team of 15 based in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Tokyo and New York.

The position entails economic analysis of Emerging Europe and servicing both internal and external clients.

Scope

  • Geographical coverage: Emerging Europe (with focus on Russia, Turkey, Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic).
  • Economic scenario: Preparation of the economic scenario, working in co-operation with the team to ensure that the global scenario is coherent. This entails forecasting key macro economic variables for the current and coming two years.
  • Policy watch: Development of central bank reaction functions and forecasts on central bank action. Analysis of fiscal policy and public debt sustainability. Development of contacts with key policymakers.
  • Data comments: Preview, live comment and post-release analysis of key data releases.
  • Thematic research: Analysis of structural trends shaping the future course of the economy and relating these to financial markets.
  • Products: Contribution to the team regular publications and thematic research.
  • Marketing: Presentation to clients of the overall global economic scenario and in-depth presentations on the geographical areas of coverage.
  • Teach-ins: Presentation to the sales and trading teams with the aim to (1) strengthen the overall knowledge base and (2) build ideas for investment products.
  • Significant autonomy in preparing research and conversing with clients.
    • Internal: Other SG research teams, sales, trading and senior management.
    • External: Clients and press.

Candidate Profile

  • A Masters Degree in Economics is a requirement for this position. Additional qualifications, such as a Ph.D., and MBA of the CFA would be welcome.
  • Significant experience from a reputable economic research team within the financial services industry or a public sector institution (IMF, OECD, central bank, etc.
  • English is a firm requirement. Russian would be a clear plus and an Eastern European language or Turkish is a nice to have.
  • IT: Microsoft Office, Bloomberg (or Reuters), DataStream (or other database platform) and E-views (or other econometric software).
  • Econometrics: Good econometric skills are required.
  • Team player: Able to interact and work within a diverse international team.
  • Strong communication skills: Ability to deliver a clear message in a convincing manner on complex issuesClient oriented: A strong understanding of the central role of our clients.
  • Reliable and quality oriented: Deadlines must be meet and products must be of high standard. This point also relates to strong ethics.
  • Flexible and open-minded: A willingness to accept new thoughts and ideas. An ability to adapt to the changing needs of our clients (both internal and external).
